EXTREMELY RARE MATCHING PAIR OF WWII-ERA FORT STORY MILITARY LICENSE PLATES. Each plate measures about 11 7/8" long and 4" tall. There are round holes and slotted holes near each of the 4 corners. The lettering is a pale yellow color over a dark red background.

Each plate is marked "FORT STORY" with the number "5". Although undated, the size and shape of these plates is identical to a Fort Monroe plate I also have listed that is dated "41-42" (please see my other listings). Fort Story is a military installation located on Cape Henry at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in the city of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Army broke ground for Fort Story in 1916. The initial mission for the facility was to provide a site for coastal defenses at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay.

Soldiers and small artillery guns were stationed at Cape Henry. In 1941, prior to the United States entering World War II, more land was acquired at Fort Story and additional gun batteries were deployed. Matching batteries were located at Fort John Custis on Cape Charles and Fort Monroe on Old Point Comfort, with the goal of guarding the entrance to Chesapeake Bay against an attack by hostile naval forces. By 1944, there was less reliance on coastal gun defenses and Fort Story transitioned from a fortified coast artillery garrison to a convalescent hospital for returning veterans. In 1949, the guns were scrapped.

In the years following, the Army found various other uses for Cape Henry, including using the beach to simulate invasions and for the testing of various amphibious vehicles. Fort Story is now a substation of Fort Eustis in Newport News. It is home to the 11th Transportation Battalion, and the Marines and Navy have small tenant commands here. The Coast Guard also maintains a presence at the Cape Henry Lighthouse.

Condition of these Fort Story license plates is FAIR. The paint is mostly intact but there are numerous scratches and some spots of corrosion. One of the slotted holes on the second license plate has a split that extends to the edge.

Overall, these plates look quite presentable and display well. Please take a close look at the photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. These plates are extremely rare and very few Fort Story examples are pictured online (no matching pairs).

Compared to other much larger military installations, relatively few vehicles were assigned to this post. You may never see another Fort Story license plate matching pair. I also have a Fort Monroe license plate for sale this week. Left Side of Plate 1. Right Side of Plate 1.

Left Side of Plate 2. Right Side of Plate 2.
